Slab demo

This is one for the books.  Originally I had plans of removing the existing slab in favor of a fresh slab.  The existing slab is roughly 16x20.  That's all fine and dandy, right?  Easy to remove, right?

Not so easy.  I rented a BobCat skidsteer from work, with both a bucket and a hammer attachment.  The hammer attachment works great for the average-joe slab.  meaning, it works great for 4-6 inch thick slabs.

After unloading the BobCat and fitting it with the hammer attachment, I went to town on the slab.  Two hours into it, I had removed only a 2 foot by 2 foot corner.  As it turns out, the footings were poured nearly 24 inches deep, and 16 inches thick.  The actual slab was TWELVE INCHES THICK!   Combine that with the fact that the stab is 30 some yeas old, and you have yourself a slab that simply isn't going anywhere.

So the plan now, is to pour over it.  Not a problem really.  Had I removed the slab, my interior ceiling height would have been roughly 12'8".  All else remaining unchanged, with a slab poured over the existing, the ceiling height will be roughly 12'4".  Still plenty tall.

Here are some pics, I call it the slab from hell:
