Building the Stairwell Part 2

And Building a Scaffold for Overhead Work

Last night I worked on the stairwell again.  As it turns out, it wasnt ONE step too long.... but TWO.  So it got trimmed, soil was backfilled and compacted, and I poured the small landing.  Complete with course aggregate finish for not slip in the winter.

This evening I picked up where I left off, and built the handrail.  Part of the existing handrail on the patio was also removed in order to extend it to the stairwell.  Good thing too.... the 2x6 that was in place in that particular part of the patio was VERY crooked.

Next up is to install the posts and pickets.

I also built a scaffold.  With a lot of overhead work coming up soon, I needed something.  It was either spend $300+ on scaffolding, $250+ on a 12' step ladder, or building something.  Including the casters, I have a bit more than $50, and an hour worth of labor in this scaffold.  And after I am done using it for constructing the interior of the garage, it will serve as a mobile workbench and storage unit.

The entire thing was glued and nailed, and is VERY sturdy.  The deck is 32" x 72". Height of the top deck is 6'. Latter on I will install a bottom deck, as well as a mid deck at work bench height.
